Integrative Education: Empowering Future Thinkers with Multidisciplinary Learning
In school, we are often taught subjects separately as if the world exists in 8 distinct divisions. But the world is complex, interweaving numerous disciplines together.
To be successful our kids will have to be able to seamlessly weave together complex thoughts from disparate sources.
Integrative Education, where multiple subjects are combined, is the FUTURE. It cultivates critical thinkers by transcending the confines of individual school subjects
Sounds complicated, but it isn't. Here’s how to get started!
5 Easy Ways to Integrate History and Science👇
1. Historical Scientific Discoveries: Explore the timeline of scientific discoveries and inventions throughout history. Discuss the context in which these breakthroughs occurred and the impact they had on society and scientific progress.
2. Historical Experiments: Recreate historical scientific experiments!! (this is a big favorite for my kids). Explore the scientific achievements of ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Discuss their advancements in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and engineering.
3. Biographies of Scientists: Study the life and contributions of famous scientists throughout history. Learn about their discoveries, challenges they faced, and how their work influenced the scientific community. There are tons of great kid-friendly biographies at your local library!
4. Evolution of Technology: Trace the evolution of technology through time. Build ancient devices and compare to their modern counterparts. Combine with videos of modern operating technology (ex: car engines). In this way you can show basic principles and how they operate in modern times.
5. Science in Art and Literature: Analyze how science is depicted in art and literature throughout different historical periods. Discuss how scientific concepts are reflected in creative works. For example, geometric shapes, perspective, symmetry, Fibonacci sequence.
By learning about science and history together, children gain a greater appreciation for both. I hope you'll enjoy trying some of these techniques to enrich your children's education.
