The first person to look through a microscope was an artist.
Well, he wouldn’t have described himself that way. But without photographs, he had no choice but to draw. Robert Hooke credited as inventing the microscope was a polymath — a scientist, an artist, an architect, an astronomer. He sketched the iconic images of a cork and flea below—still featured in science textbooks today. How did he achieve so much?
He mastered a single, vital skill: Observation.
Observation goes beyond "looking." It’s inspecting, analyzing, comparing—the essence of both art and science.
By drawing, children master observation.
Every modern scientist stands on the shoulders of past giants. During my formative year as a scientist, I studied Sherrington, the father of neuroscience, whose late 19th and early 20th-century work birthed an entire field.
He had no clinical trials, no computers, nor fancy statistics. He had only observation.
It’s a lost art, observation. The ability to sit, examine, contemplate. Children who can do this will appear like visionaries as adults.
They’ll have an eye for detail, an appreciation for the nuances of nature, and a thoughtful approach to the world. These skills are more than just academic—they foster a sense of curiosity and wonder that will lead to lifelong learning and discovery.
In a world that rushes past the small moments, teaching kids to pause and truly see opens the universe.
Below, I walk you through a set of lessons I crafted for our co-op of kids aged 6-11 to help them walk the path to polymath themselves.. Your kids will 👇
Uncover the hidden microscopic world that changed science forever.
Discover how the invention of the microscope revolutionized modern science and medicine.
Explore the powerful fusion of art and science, learning from some of history’s greatest polymaths Cajal, da Vinci, & Haeckel.
All while engaging in Socratic discussion & walking the path towards becoming polymaths themselves
